Early Academic Pursuits 📚

Prof. Byoung S. Ham began his academic journey with a Bachelor's degree in Physics from Sogang University, South Korea, in 1986. He furthered his education in the United States, obtaining a Master's degree in Physics from Wayne State University in 1993, followed by a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the same institution in 1995. His doctoral thesis focused on the experimental study of lasing without population inversion in ruby, while his master's thesis dealt with the external cavity amplification of photon echo.

Professional Endeavors 🏢

Prof. Ham's career has been marked by significant contributions to academia and research institutions. After completing his Ph.D., he joined the Research Laboratory of Electronics at MIT as a postdoctoral associate, where he conducted research on optical quantum memories from 1996 to 1999. He returned to South Korea in 1999, joining the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) as a senior researcher and project leader. From 2003 to 2013, he served as an associate professor, professor, and Inha Fellow Professor at Inha University. In 2013, he joined the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) as a distinguished professor and has been directing the Center for Photon Information Processing since then.
